About the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh:

The mission of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh (www.worldaffairspittsburgh.org) is to promote, on a non-partisan basis, understanding of important international issues, throughout the community and with a special focus on the region's secondary schools.  Through its International Affairs Education Program, the Council's outreach also encompasses more than 275 schools throughout Western Pennsylvania. The Council offers more than 100 school programs annually, helping students and teachers keep pace with events and issues in a world changing faster than educational materials at their disposal.

Summary of Position:

The Education Program Manager develops and implements educational programs and activities in secondary schools and the broader community in Western Pennsylvania.  Primary responsibilities include: designing school and community outreach programs; coordinating and executing program logistics; preparing program materials; research and writing; proofreading and editing; supervising interns. 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement education programs and activities on international issues in secondary (middle and high) schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Maintain close liaison with teachers to coordinate program implementation and to ensure effective and efficient use of Council resources to meet educational needs.
  • Design, manage, and execute selected special school programs for students and teachers.
  • Manage and execute visits by Council speakers to schools, including matching speakers to schools and meeting associated logistic and administrative requirements.
  • Ensure timely communication with speakers and hosts, including invitation letters, confirmation letters, and thank you letters for school programs.
  • Create program materials (promotional brochures, agendas, resource guides, etc.).
  • Conduct research and writing, as well as proofreading and editing, in support of Council programs, as directed.
  • Maintain and update the Council’s printed and web-based information resources on world affairs and associated educational materials.
  • Supervise the Council’s educational outreach interns.
  • Cultivate relationships with universities and other organizations in the community to help leverage resources in support of school programs.
  • Maintain currency on important issues in international affairs to help shape the direction of Council programs. 
  • Assist in developing ways of utilizing technology (website, webcasts, etc.) to maximize impact of school and community programs.
  • Assist in and provide general support for the design, development, and implementation of all Council programs and other outreach in the region.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; preferably some experience living/working abroad and working with students and/or teachers; excellent communication and organizational skills; ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with high attention to detail; ability to work proactively and independently as well as part of a team; positive attitude; strong work ethic; ability to relate well with diverse populations.
