Winchester Thurston School, a PreKindergarten-Grade 12 independent school, announces a search for a Director of Institutional Advancement. Institutional Advancement is comprised of Development, Parents Association, and Alumnae/i Relations. Having completed a $15 million campaign in 2007, the focus in Development has been on stewardship of major donors, cultivation of new relationships, and planning for the next five years. The Director of Institutional Advancement will be responsible for overseeing all Development efforts of the school, for building a Major Gifts program, and for planning and leading the next major campaign. The Director of Institutional Advancement reports directly to the Head of School. The Director is a member of the Head’s Cabinet and the Informed Management Team.
Major Areas of Responsibility
Development Oversight
- The Director of Development, Director of Annual Giving, and Director of Alumnae/i Relations report to the Director of Institutional Advancement, who provides direction for day-to-day operational needs and management of department budgets. With the assistance of the Head of School and members of the development and alumnae/i staff, the Director establishes annual goals and objectives, tasks, and evaluation procedures.
- Develops and directs systems to ensure a coordinated, integrated plan for development.
- Serves as Staff Liaison to the Board Development Committee and its subcommittees. Member of Finance Committee and Buildings & Grounds Committee.
- Pursues continuing education and professional development opportunities.
Major Gifts
- Accountable and responsible for Major Gifts Program: Develops strategy, sets goals, and monitors progress.
- Directs, leads, motivates, and partners with Trustees and Head of School in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting leadership and major donor prospects (individuals and foundations).
- Manages a personal portfolio of high-level major gift prospects. Oversees Head, Director of Development, Director of Annual Giving, and Director of Alumnae/i Relations in their management of their own personal portfolios of high-level major gift prospects and donors.
- Works with Director of Development in writing grants and managing Foundation reporting/stewardship.
- Works with Director of Development on stewardship of leadership donors, including those with endowed funds at the school.
Campaign Leadership and Oversight
- Plans and oversees implementation of overall campaign strategy, including major events, communications, research, cultivation/solicitation, acknowledgment, donor recognition.
- Designs/plans/organizes/implements/tracks/monitors campaign progress.
- Works with Director of Development to oversee gift processing and acknowledgment.
- Coordinates the campaign with volunteer leadership, counsel, and school staff.
- Oversees management of campaign volunteers.
Qualifications
- Experience and a successful track record in a Development leadership position
- Demonstrated ability to lead in a team setting
- Desired dispositions include confidence, optimism, initiative, energy, and warmth
- Knowledge of or experience with independent schools
