Position Overview:
The Mattress Factory is seeking a Development Coordinator to create effective project management, communication and filing and reporting systems to ensure that grant applications, reports and other development department fundraising correspondence are developed, submitted in a timely manner and tracked. S/he is responsible for identifying and researching funding opportunities and writing grant applications.  The Development Coordinator works collaboratively as a member of a team that includes a Membership Coordinator/Development Assistant, Marketing Coordinator, part-time Grant writer and development interns, reporting to the Museum’s Directors to achieve annual and special fundraising goals.  S/he works closely with the Museum’s Assistant Director to ensure that grant budgets and revisions are accurate and align with the organization’s approved annual, capital and special project budgets.  S/he ensures that grants received are reported in an accurate and timely manner to the Museum Directors, Assistant Director, and other staff involved with the grant project, and that grant budget revisions are created in concert with the Directors, Assistant Director and staff involved with the project.  S/he and other members of the development and marketing team work together to plan and implement prospect cultivation and fundraising events, and support the fundraising and prospect cultivation work of the Board of Directors and other fundraising volunteers.  The successful candidate will have at least two years of relevant professional experience; excellent grant writing, organizational and interpersonal skills, and poise and professionalism to work with high level foundation professionals and museum supporters.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Research local, national and international grant sources, and prepare briefing materials that help the Museum’s Directors, the Board of Directors and others involved in solicitations develop effective requests for support.
  • Write/prepare grant applications, related supplementary materials, and grant reports, working with the organization’s part-time Grant writer to effectively manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Develop and implement ongoing systems (in consultation with other development team members), that anticipate funding deadlines; and schedule, monitor and document the submission of grant applications, follow-up correspondence/calls, acknowledgments and reports.    
  • Develop and implement effective internal communication and management systems that keep Museum Directors and appropriate staff apprised of development deadlines, follow up tasks, and other activities of the department.
  • Support the development and cultivation work of the Board of Directors and fundraising volunteers.
  • Work with the Assistant Director to ensure accuracy of grant application budgets and budget re-visions.
  • Prepare and circulate accurate internal fundraising reports that align with the organization’s financial statements.

Experience, Skills and Attributes:

  • Experience researching grant prospects and preparing grant applications and supplementary materials for corporate, foundation and government grants (large and small)
  • Excellent writing and grant writing skills, including the ability to create a compelling case for support and clear/effective correspondence
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy, ability to anticipate and manage toward deadlines
  • Experience creating budgets
  • Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively represent the Mattress Factory at events and meetings.   
  • A flexible, creative approach to work, and ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Experience working with Board members and foundation professionals, including the poise and professionalism expected by business leaders and supporters.
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit arts sector (visual arts a plus)
  • Ability to multi-task and work under deadlines
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel;  Mac OS a plus
