Director Community Outreach Team, Mon Valley Initiative – Pittsburgh, PA

SUMMARY:

  • Plan, develop, and establish the Community Outreach objectives in accordance with Board directives and organizational charter.
  • Implement the strategic plan of the Mon Valley Initiative.
  • Supervise staff responsible for implementing the Community Outreach Team functions.
  • Build the capacity of member Community Development Corporations (CDCs) and facilitate community involvement in the planning and implementation of a range of programs/projects. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Responsible for providing direction and supervision to Community Organizer(s).
  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with MVI board, staff, and community & regional partners.
  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with MVI’s Community Development Corporations.
  • Conduct in-depth community and CDC assessments.
  • Facilitate town hall meetings (or other means of garnering larger-scale input) and /or assist local CDC leaders to coordinate such input.
  • Work with targeted CDCs to become well organized and effective organizations.
  • Develop and implement, in conjunction with CDC members, a volunteer recruitment campaign for targeted CDCs.
  • Assist the CDCs develop on-going, effective communication strategies with their members and the community-at-large.
  • Supervise the Community Organizer(s) in assisting the CDC boards with CDC Capacity Building Process.
  • Oversee production of marketing tools for MVI and its CDCs such as newsletters, flyers, press releases, and other materials designed to build awareness of MVI and CDC programs, accomplishments, point of view, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Coordinate the three major MVI events, the annual conference, golf outing, and the annual dinner/volunteer recognition award night. Coordinate other events as needed.
  • Collaborate with CEO, COO, and MVI Team Leaders on strategies for the coalition.
  • Assist the CEO and COO in identifying potential financial resources and in the preparation of proposals for funding to insure the financial stability of MVI.
  • Insure that documents and records for the team are prepared and maintained properly.
  • Insure the achievement of all team and personal annual goals.
  • Written monthly team reports.
  • Written review of job accomplishments once per year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well to a diverse population, including CDC members, business people, elected officials, funders, technical assistance and economic development agency staff.
  • Firm command of procedures and responsibilities of the non-profit board. i.e. tax filing, by-laws, conflict of interest, effective meetings, board insurance.
  • Awareness of best practices for community organizing in grassroots organizations.
  • Willingness to travel locally and work evenings to attend CDC board meetings and other events.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a strong network of resources in the area.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to work in a team concept.
  • High degree of self-initiative and creative approach to work.
  • Strive to develop new skills while maintaining present skills.
  • Share information and encourage learning among others.
  • Enthusiasm, optimism, persistence and pragmatism.
  • Must provide own transportation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field and 5-7 years equivalent grassroots and management experience.
