The Director of Member Services works as part of a three-person team to advance the mission of Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania (GWP), a membership association for the region’s philanthropic community.  GWP’s mission is to promote excellence in philanthropy.  For more information, please visit www.gwpa.org.

Overview

This position entails developing and overseeing GWP’s member services, in collaboration with the executive director and GWP members.  Member services include, but are not limited to, the design and delivery of professional education programs for grantmakers and, on selected occasions, the broader nonprofit community; coordination and staffing of GWP member affinity groups and committees; oversight of information and research projects; and content development and management for GWP’s website.  The Director will also play an active role in member recruitment and in marketing GWP services.

The following are among the types of services that the Director of Member Services will develop and deliver together with other members of the team:

  • Regular issues-based programs designed to keep grantmakers informed regarding a wide range of community issues.
  • Regular meetings of GWP affinity groups.
  • Periodic seminars for regional community foundation leaders.
  • The Nonprofit Summit, a regional conference attracting up to 1,000 registrants which serves grantmakers and grantseekers.
  • Research projects as periodically identified by GWP. 
  • Other member programs and services as they are created and needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

Assess needs and interests of GWP’s constituencies (private and family foundations, community foundations, corporate foundations and giving programs, federations and public charities) in order to ensure GWP’s services respond to members’ needs.

  • Nurture connections between and among members.
  • Participate in member recruitment.
  • Conduct and analyze member surveys; make recommendations to adjust and improve GWP’s services accordingly.
  • Provide staff support to GWP committees such as the Member Programs and Services, Information Management and Public Policy committees.
  • Stay current on regional association member services strategies and best practices.

Professional Education

Develop professional education opportunities that meet the needs of GWP members.

  • Provide coordination and staff support to GWP’s affinity groups.
  • Help develop and oversee marketing efforts to inform and attract members to GWP’s programs.
  • Engage members in program recommendations and in co-hosting programs, to the extent possible.
  • Regularly invite and respond to feedback on GWP programs.

Information Services

  • Ensure that GWP’s website serves as a robust and valued information tool by managing its content.
  • Oversee delivery of GWP e-newsletter to members.
  • Ensure clear, timely and un-intrusive communications with GWP members.
  • Respond to, track and analyze individual member information inquiries.
  • Oversee benchmarking research such as the health benefits and administrative compensation studies.

Nonprofit Community Services

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver the Nonprofit Summit (with other staff and GWP members).
  • Work with The Foundation Center to deliver “Meet the Grantmakers” programs.
  • Oversee periodic review and revision of the Common Grant Application format and Common Report Form.

Qualifications and Skills

GWP seeks candidates with a minimum of five years’ increasingly responsible professional experience.  Familiarity with the region’s philanthropic community and experience in Web content management and Web-based communications are strongly preferred.  Also of particular interest will be experience in project planning and management; development of professional education programs; and event coordination and management.  The ideal candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills; budget management skills; interpersonal skills; and the ability to work both independently and as a team member.  Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word and Excel is essential.
