CL Fund provides capital and education to entrepreneurs and growing small businesses to create new jobs and expand economic opportunity across western Pennsylvania.  For over 17 years, CL Fund has provided alternative financing to start-ups and other small businesses planning to grow.  With $46 million in assets under management, it fills a gap in the traditional lending market by connecting people with flexible financing and educational opportunities, often unavailable from banks.  CL Fund acts as a catalyst for entrepreneurs on their path to growth.  CL Fund is a nonprofit organization, certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) by the U.S. Treasury Department. 

Business Education Coordinator Responsibilities
Organize education services to strengthen business operations and management of current and potential CL Fund borrowers.  More specifically:

  • Arrange for maximum use of business education programs provided by third parties (Small Business Development Centers, other universities, SCORE, consultants etc.)
  • Enhance effective communication and collaborative relationships among CL Fund, its borrowers, potential borrowers and third party business education providers
    • Inform borrowers and potential borrowers about CL Fund business education resources
    • Develop content for e-mail newsletters on a regular basis
    • Schedule and approve subcontracted business education services from a variety of providers, partially paid for by CL Fund 
  • Coordinate the provision of business education services directly by CL Fund (i.e. Fast Trac, training by Callidus partners and presentations or consultations by CL Fund personnel)
  • Plan and create new CL Fund mentor/protégé program for borrowers
  • Measure and report results of the business education program on a regular basis
  • Ensure effective and complete use of SBA Micro Loan Program Technical Assistance grant funds each year (see Opportunity Assistance program)

Business Education Coordinator Traits and Skills
CL Fund values entrepreneurial employees who are determined, agile, open-minded, forward-looking and

  • Able to manage the entire business education function (no direct reports) in a strategic and organized manner
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and move all of them forward at the same time (e.g., schedule training classes, recruit mentors, assess business needs of borrowers, and arrange for maximum use of third-party education resources)
  • Self-motivated and requiring little supervision
  • Capable of prioritizing tasks and identifying problems and their solutions
  • Able to add new program elements when outlined by management
  • Capable of  good business sense – i.e., able to interview borrowers and identify areas of weakness in their businesses, and determine what steps should be taken to address the weaknesses
  • Adept at  marketing the business education program in a creative manner

Business Education Coordinator Qualifications

  • College degree required, graduate degree preferred
  • 3 to 5 years business experience including:
    • Commercial lending, or
    • Business management (i.e. managing a store)
  • Demonstrated business acumen  
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Able to initiate, plan and work independently with minimal supervision
