Senior Accountant, August Wilson for African American Culture - Pittsbugh, PA

Position Summary:
The August Wilson for African American Culture presents, interprets and preserves the art, culture and history of African Americans in Pittsburgh and of people of African descent throughout the world. The Center realizes it mission through an engaging schedule of visual and performing arts presentations as well as historical, educational and public programs. The Center is scheduled to open a new 65,000 square foot multidisciplinary cultural center that includes an education center in early 2009.
Under general direction of the Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant is responsible for independent performance of professional accounting and administrative tasks required as well as maintaining the centralized revenue and expenditure accounts of the department. The Senior Accountant is required to work on a production basis in the performance of professional accounting tasks. The individual works closely with all Central Departments of the Center, External Auditors on the Financial Management and reporting of donations.
Reporting Relationship:
The Senior Accountant reports to the Director of Finance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Records organization’s business transactions and retains all accounting records.
- Verifies, and reconciles bank accounts, accounts payable, accounts receivable, expenses, payroll, and other ledger accounts.
- Maintain Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, Net Asset and Support & Revenue Schedules.
- Compare cash requirements to cash flow and communicate cash requirements to Director of Finance.
- Maintain all Bank Account Balances.
- Prepare and enter various journal entries to properly classify expenses and revenues.
- In the absence of the Bookkeeper prepares invoices, vouchers, and checks.
- Preparation of Cash Basis financial and operating reports.
- May assist in analysis and interpretation of accounting reports for use by management.
- Attends all required staff meetings and training sessions.
- Offer support and assistance to peer staff members.
- Adhere to AWC Confidentiality Policy
- Maintain a professional manner at all times.
- May assume other duties as required.
- Occasional early arrivals, late evenings and weekend work is required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting required.
- A minimum of five years of relevant accounting experience.
- Must have a sound knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping procedures.
- QuickBooks and PC/Microsoft Office skills are required.
- Attention to detail, self-motivated, thoroughness, effective communication skills
- Ability to analyze information
- Ability to direct the activities of the Bookkeeper and serve as an effective team player with the broader staff.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, outside agencies, customers and the public at large.
- Lift up to 25 pounds
ENVIRONMENT:
- Typical office environment. Heavy use of personal computer and repetitive motion consistent with standard office procedures.
- Minimum travel required.
