Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Wilson College - Chambersburg, PA

Posted: 3/27/12

Wilson College invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA). This is an opportune time for the new VPIA to join a charismatic and energetic new President in her first years at Wilson. The College recently completed its Leading with Confidence capital campaign, surpassing the $45 million goal to raise more than $51 million. The new VP will be coming to Wilson during the early phase of a fundraising campaign whose first objective will be to renovate and transform the college’s library into a learning commons. The VPIA reports directly to the president and oversees a staff of 10. Working collaboratively with the president, as a member of her senior leadership team, and with the college’s faculty and staff, alumnae/alumni and friends, including a cadre of dedicated volunteers, the VPIA provides leadership to the college community in fundraising and donor relations.

Founded in 1869 as a rigorous liberal arts college for women, Wilson College continues to lead and innovate among colleges and universities in educating women in the liberal arts and sciences. The January 2009 opening of its new LEED-certified Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics and Technology advanced not only that tradition, but also Wilson’s practice of sustainability.  To complement the undergraduate residential women’s college, a continuing education program was founded in 1983 and made Wilson the first college in the region to welcome adult women and men; Wilson is now celebrating its 30th year of adult degree programs. In the mid-1980s, the College’s Teacher Internship Program was established to offer adults with baccalaureate degrees the opportunity to become certified to teach in Pennsylvania, and in 2006, the College began offering a master’s degree program in education. In addition, this year, the college has introduced a new master’s degree in humanities. In the mid-1990s, the College launched its award-winning Women with Children program that provides campus housing year-round to single mothers and their children so that the mother can pursue a bachelor’s degree full-time. One of the first of its kind in the nation, this program has been celebrated by the Council of Independent Colleges, the Lumina Foundation, and The New York Times and serves as a model and resource to other institutions who wish to establish such a program. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Wilson 11th overall in the category of best regional colleges in the northern region for 2011-12; this is the ninth consecutive year that Wilson has been recognized in the rankings. Wilson is guided by the Wilson Honor Principle, established in 1905 to hold the Wilson community to the highest standards of integrity.

In 2011-12, Wilson is serving 322 women in its undergraduate college and 376 women and men in its adult degree programs. The College’s faculty is comprised of 44 full-time and 31 to 43 part-time members. Alumnae/alumni number about 8,000. Located on 300 rolling acres along the Conococheague Creek in Chambersburg, the College is within driving distance of Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. In 1995, the Wilson College campus was named a National Historic District.

The successful candidate will be an experienced development professional with the capacity to build and lead a comprehensive development operation and to interface with the other divisions of the institution. Strong management and leadership skills, exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and experience in developing and implementing new fundraising and stewardship strategies, in addition to volunteer leadership and donor relations expertise, are essential. Candidates must have qualities of character and values that resonate with Wilson’s mission and culture of collaboration. A bachelor’s degree is essential; an advanced degree is preferred.
