Program Description
The Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows Program (PSFP) is one of 13 programs across the nation of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship whose mission is to develop leaders in service by recruiting graduate students to work in underserved communities for a year while they remain in graduate school. Unconventional by traditional standards, PSFP provides an unparalleled opportunity for Fellows’ personal and professional growth by connecting methodology to the real world. By carrying out an original direct service project in Pittsburgh’s underserved neighborhoods, Fellows face the rewards, challenges and opportunities intrinsic in developing a project from idea to implementation. The aim of the new initiative, the Environmental Schweitzer Fellows Project is to enlighten, empower and mobilize residents in environmentally at risk communities regarding environmental effects on health.

Job Summary
This position is a part time position (20 hours/week) with a flexible work schedule and some weekend work for a creative and experienced professional interested in working with graduate students who have been selected for a new initiative of the Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows Program, the Environmental Fellows Project. The coordinator needs to have an interest in and knowledge about environmental effects on health and experience in working with community agencies.
The coordinator will establish and maintain relationships with organizations in environmentally at risk communities in southwest PA and will work with approximately 5 -10 graduate students who are implementing projects in these communities. Comfort with nonprofit agencies, graduate students and university faculty and underserved communities a must. Event planning experience a plus. The Coordinator for the Environmental project will work closely with PSFP’s Director to ensure the success of the Environmental Project and will be a team player who is well organized. The Coordinator’s main tasks will be: 1)to cultivate and solidify relationships with community agencies in environmentally at risk communities,2) to collect information regarding environmental effects on health to assess agency and community needs and 3) to help shape Fellows’ projects to meet those needs. He/she will establish a relationship with all Schweitzer Fellows and will monitor and evaluate requirements of the Environmental Fellows. The Coordinator will possess excellent written and oral communications and the ability to coordinate activities and execute plans.

  • Travel in Pittsburgh metro area
  • Professional appearance and dress
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills
  • Ability to interact with diverse constituencies
  • Self starter with ability to act independently within a highly collaborative atmosphere
  • Represent PSFP as the face of the organization to stakeholders
  • Provide support for Fellows
  • Experience in conducting group and individual meetings
  • Attend weekly meetings with Director and monthly staff meetings with host agency, Fellows monthly meetings and Advisory Board and Committee meetings.
  • Superb organizational skills with strong follow through to meet deadlines.
  • Flexible work schedule; occasional weekend work
  • Oversee annual environmental symposium

Salary commensurate with experience.
