JOB TITLE:   GRANT WRITER

REPORTS TO:   DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

POSITION SUMMARY: The National Aviary seeks a grant writer who will identify, qualify, and develop public and private funding sources for new and existing activities and operational needs; write and submit grant proposals; gather and analyze information for use in proposals and reports related to the performance of funded activities; prepare reports and donor correspondence.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifies, develops, and responds to public and private grant opportunities which support the National Aviary’s funding needs in the areas of general operations, environmental education, avian health and welfare, and conservation of endangered species
  • Develops written grant proposals which are persuasive, professional in appearance and content, and compliant with donor application guidelines
  • Prepares all correspondence pertaining to diverse fundraising activities
  • Establishes a time-management system to ensure timely grant submissions, reports, and donor acknowledgements
  • Creates an on-line system for storage and easy access to grant documents
  • Generates sufficient grant opportunities to exceed annual budget target for grant income

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience as a grant writer

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong written communications skills
  • Knowledgeable of research techniques and sources of information used in identifying potential donor prospects
  • Skilled in collecting, interpreting, and incorporating diverse data into grant proposals and reports to strengthen the case for support
  • Works well with others on cross-departmental projects; also able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Highly organized with good time management skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), use of databases and fundraising software

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Adaptable to a constantly changing work environment
  • Knowledge of avian, wildlife and environmental issues a plus
