Development Associate, National Aviary - Pittsburgh, PA

Position Summary:  The National Aviary seeks a motivated, well-organized, and personable individual with skills and experience working in a development organization.  This position involves all aspects of donor cultivation, but focuses on growing donors and members.  Key responsibilities include:  managing the donor database; researching the market for prospective new donors; tracking and analyzing donor data; generating reports from the database; communicating with members and donors; and assisting with the creation of giving programs and donor cultivation events. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

DATABASE ADMINISTRATION
Enters and updates information into the database and ensures the data’s accuracy. Entries include:  foundation, corporation and individual donor profiles; donor giving histories; member ship and Adopt-A-Bird program information; campaign and pledge collections

Produces reports and interprets donor data to improve effectiveness of existing giving programs and to create new programs

Generates donor-specific and membership related correspondence

DONOR DEVELOPMENT
Conducts prospect research by scanning business journals, news periodicals, and other sources to identify potential donors; prepares written donor synopses

Assists in the creation of donor cultivation themes and events

Creates targeted mailing lists; conducts all mass mailings for the Development department

Develops donor correspondence which showcases organizational accomplishments and appeals to members, individual donors, or donor group interests; conducts follow up communications activities

Attends donor cultivation events

MEMBERSHIP
Processes new and renewing memberships and fulfillment elements on a timely basis

Annually, evaluates membership categories, benefits, and pricing in comparison to those offered by other cultural amenities; recommends changes to enhance the National Aviary’s program’s attractiveness

Ensures that the National Aviary’s website’s membership information is accurate

Organizes annual membership acquisition drive

Assists in creating member-focused events to drive more frequent attendance at both free and paying events; attends member events 

Serves as editor of Bird Calls quarterly newsletter

ADOPT-A-BIRD (AAB)
Processes AAB sponsorships and fulfillment elements on a timely basis

Annually, evaluates AAB categories, benefits, and pricing in comparison to similar programs offered by other cultural amenities; recommends changes to enhance the National Aviary’s program’s attractiveness

Works with Animal Program staff to update bird biographies and to target select species for special promotions throughout the year 

Ensures that the National Aviary’s website’s AAB information is accurate

Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree preferred; Associate’s Degree from two year college or technical school; plus two to five years of development experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficient in use of databases and fundraising software with a preference for E-Tapestry

Excellent oral and written communications skills (three writing samples required)

Confident in presenting information and answering questions about his/her area of responsibility from donors, visitors, board members, and staff

Works well with others on cross-departmental projects

Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Other Requirements
Works independently and needs minimal supervision  
Adaptable to a constantly changing work environment
Attends evening and week-end events as needed
Interested in avian, wildlife and environmental issues

Salary  – Commensurate with qualifications
