Organizational Overview
The New Hazlett Center for the Performing Arts (New Hazlett Theater, NHT) was founded in 2004 to oversee the renovation and launch of a performing arts venue on Pittsburgh’s Northside. The 450-seat multi-use theater is fully accessible for audiences and performers, and is a favorite among small and mid-sized performing arts organizations in Southwestern PA. 

The mission of NHT is to support a range of regional arts groups by providing a professional, affordable venue. Primary NHT goals are: a). cultivate and nurture the performing arts in Pittsburgh; b). provide a functional stage and auditorium to support presentation of live theatrical productions, dance performances, and music events for audiences of 300-500 attendees; c). serve as a stable, affordable home for Pittsburgh’s diverse small arts groups, supporting their missions and providing a foundation for their continued growth and development; d). provide professional production support d). serve as an integral part of the cultural district on the Northside; e). allow for experimentation in the range of works invited to Pittsburgh, through creative collaborations and partnerships with presenters and promoters

Each year, NHT hosts 26,000 visitors and supports the work of 35-45 partners. Programming includes dramatic theater, dance, conferences, family-oriented theater, performance-art events, music, and spoken word performances, among other programming options.  Theater offerings appeal to children, families, and adult audiences.

Executive Director Job Summary
The Executive Director is the lead staff position overseeing operations of a 450-seat performing arts and multi-use venue on Pittsburgh’s North Side. The ED serves as primary liaison to the New Hazlett Theater (NHT) Board of Directors and all constituents, including project donors, audiences, artists and partner organizations that rent the theater. Prior experience with Non-profit organizations is required.

Executive Director Responsibilities
Serve as leadership staff of NHT, reporting to the Board of Directors and directing all aspects of NHT’s operations;

Effectively represent and position NHT as a viable and critical venue that nurtures Pittsburgh’s performing arts community;

Implement operational procedures that ensure a safe, efficient and professional venue for audiences, performers, and presenters, while securing NHT’s own operational future;

Identify and secure funding including public and private grants, individual contributions and corporate giving opportunities;

Identify annual goals, including numbers of events scheduled and revenue targets, and oversee marketing, outreach and rental agreement efforts to ensure success;

Develop operating budgets that will allow for the financial and programmatic success of NHT;

Analyze strategic challenges faced by the organization and formulate creative solutions, alliances, and business initiatives to support and meet the goals of NHT’s strategic plan;

Enhance NHT’s visibility by building strong relationships with appropriate cultural and civic organizations, government officials, and community leaders;

Effectively develop and manage a relationship with the board that allows for the open communication of ideas, policies and procedures, and other operational matters that are vital to NHT’s success;

Provide thoughtful and accessible leadership and mentoring for NHT’s professional staff.  Encourage an environment of teamwork and shared objectives;

Ensure NHT’s compliance with all legal and regulatory guidelines and requirements.
