Organization and History:

Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) is a 210-bed, full-service health care facility with a 225-member medical staff representing more than 40 medical specialties. With more than 1,100 employees, MVH is the largest employer in the mid-Monongahela Valley and the third largest employer in Washington County. The 100th anniversary was celebrated in December 2002. The health care system traces its heritage to the turn of the century when its predecessor facilities, Charleroi-Monessen Hospital and Memorial Hospital of Monongahela, were founded. The two hospitals consolidated on July 1, 1972, forming what is now Monongahela Valley Hospital. The current facility in Carroll Township opened in September 1978.

Position Overview and Primary Function:

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, the Vice President of Development is responsible for overseeing the day to day administration of the organization’s annual development campaigns, special projects, other fund-raising initiatives and its donor relations program. To ensure a strong base of ongoing philanthropic support the successful candidate will take a strategic approach towards the identification and cultivation of donors and work cooperatively with the CEO, Board and other volunteers to further a culture of philanthropy.  The Vice President of Development is either directly or indirectly responsible for the following:

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Serves as administrative liaison to the Fund Development Committee responsible for current initiatives such as the Annual Gala, Hearts that Care, Pathways Promoting Progress in Health, Community Fund-raising Campaigns and any future initiatives.

  • Develops a strategic approach to the identification and cultivation of donors utilizing volunteer, print, and internet resources.

  • Maintains a portfolio of major gift prospects including current and potential corporate and foundation supporters to cultivate and solicit on an annual basis.

  • Ensures systematic efforts remain focused to identify, solicit, steward, maintain and grow the annual giving donor base including perpetuating their giving through planned gifts.

  • Manages the databases to record donor contact and preference information.

  • Develops innovative recognition opportunities for continuity and donor stewardship with an accounting of the impact that their gift has on service area needs.

  • Prospects by making personal calls to donors and their financial advisors year round to ensure a growing base of support and facilitating gift arrangements which require tax or estate planning.

  • Performs risk analyses to focus efforts upon the most appropriate fund-raising activities with the highest chance of success.

  • Develops and annual budget and monitors income and expenditure against budget and targets and prepares reports for the CEO and the Board related to fundraising progress.

  • Manages the creation of promotional materials such as brochures, annual reports and other materials that highlight yearly milestones and achievements.

  • Develops new and imaginative fund-raising initiatives including those which are events-based and develops and coordinates web-based fund-raising and actively seeks out opportunities to be involved in the community and acts as an ambassador for philanthropy.

  • Works collaboratively with the staff with an attitude of collegiality and mutual support.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate has a blend of the following:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of nonprofit experience, desirably in a healthcare setting.

  • Undergraduate degree required -master’s degree in related field preferred.

  • A strategist, with extensive experience managing signature programs in development.

  • Proven record of fundraising success in personally soliciting annual and major gifts including capital campaign management experience.

  • Experience in growing a program into a fully functioning development effort. 

  • Success working collaboratively and motivating a Board of Directors.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.

  • Financial acumen in managing organizational or department budgets in healthcare or nonprofit settings.
