This newly created position is ideal for a mission-driven, experienced development professional who seeks to serve in a key role of helping to strengthen the current fundraising initiatives of the McGuire Memorial Foundation. The Director of Development and Special Events will assist the Executive Director of the McGuire Memorial Foundation in developing and establishing a comprehensive development program (for the McGuire Memorial Foundation).
This professional will serve as the key staff member responsible for the success of current and future special fund raising events.
The Director of Development and Special Events must be prepared to assume the leadership role in: directing the day to day operations; managing the annual operating budget; providing oversight of the two individuals who serve on staff; and assist in the cultivation and solicitation of current and potential donors. This newly created position is established out of the necessity for the Executive Director to focus on the $8 million “Giving the Gift of Hope” Capital Campaign, major gifts and planned giving.
Position Overview
Working full-time and reporting to the Executive Director of the McGuire Memorial Foundation, the Director of Development and Special Events provides management for the two-member staff, leads the day to day development and administrative functions of the Foundation as well as the growth of current initiatives and in establishing new fund raising strategies. This position is the central and responsible position for all special event fund raising.
Principle Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree required; graduate degree in non-profit management, business or marketing preferred.
- Five (5) or more years of professional experience in development/institutional advancement.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead employees and others to set and achieve goals.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead volunteers (board members, committee members, auxiliary, general community, etc.).
- Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
- Strong cultivation and closing skills.
- Computer and software proficiency (Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher) and in-depth knowledge and experience with Raisers’ Edge database management system and add-on programs (such as special event).
- Success in individual, foundation, government, and corporate relations and solicitation.
- Experience in managing staff members of a development/institutional advancement office.
- Experience in establishing and managing budgets for projects, events, and a development/fund raising department.
- High energy, positive, “can-do: attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail.
- High degree of initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to think and perform strategically.
Major Responsibilities
Planning and Development:
- Responsible for overall administration, coordination, and development of special events which includes (but not limited to) planning, budgeting, marketing, volunteers, and staffing. Serves as the central contact within the Foundation staff for special event fundraising. Builds strong relationships between McGuire Memorial and the Foundation with volunteers, event participants, vendors, donors, and sponsors.
- Work with the Executive Director to create and implement a comprehensive development plan for the Foundation (for sustaining support, special projects and capital needs).
- Work with the Executive Director to enhance the visibility of McGuire Memorial and the McGuire Memorial Foundation in the region.
- Work with staff and volunteers to insure that the annual operating budget required of the Foundation is achieved.
Cultivation and Solicitation
- Assist in research for grant opportunities, the writing of proposals for grants, and creating follow-up reports to foundations and corporations.
- Support the efforts of volunteer led special fund raising events for the McGuire Memorial Foundation.
- Assist in improving connectivity with current and prospective donors. Participate in the creation of life-long donors.
- Assist in the identification, cultivation and nurturing of relationships with current and potential corporate and foundation sponsors and underwriters of events sponsored by the Foundation.
- Assist in thanking donors in a personal and timely fashion via: telephone calls, special notes, and visits to targeted donors and involve Executive and Board leadership in the process when necessary.
- Increase the recruitment of current/notable celebrities to the Golf Classic and Auction.
- Outreach to public and private schools to secure students support/participation, involve students from local colleges/universities, other community groups (to increase special event fund raising driven by volunteer groups).
- Create and implement a “welcome program” for donors new to the Foundation.
- Assist in establishing a memorial/tribute giving program for the Foundation.
- Assist in creating/establish an Annual Report for the Foundation and ongoing communications (non-solicitation) to donors, friends, sponsors, underwriters, volunteers and potential donors.
- Identify and implement strategies that broaden the base of support for the Annual Fund, Angel Club, Tree of Life, United Way, and for other ongoing fund raising activities.
- Write monthly thank you letters, special acknowledgement letters, and assist with departmental writing needs.
- Promote the mission and mission of McGuire Memorial through events sponsored by the McGuire Memorial Foundation.
- Oversee the development and implementation of a plan for donor recognition and ongoing stewardship of small to mid-level donors.
- Plan and direct special events as developed in the annual plan.
- Provide oversight of the development and maintenance of an active and current web-page for the Foundation.
Management
- Manage and track income and expenses of the annual operating budget ($2 million in income).
- Responsible for oversight in developing and leading the annual plan to generate the operating budget of the Foundation.
- Insure that the Human Resource Policies/Procedures of McGuire Memorial are followed by staff.
- Create and administer policies and procedures of the McGuire Memorial Foundation.
- Maximize the potential of the Raiser’s Edge system for the Foundation and with staff.
- Participate in organizational functions of McGuire Memorial such as (this list is not all inclusive): Family Christmas Parties, Family Picnics, holiday celebration events, functions held by outside organizations for the benefit of McGuire Memorial such as the Knights of Columbus Golf Outing, employee awards events, the Annual Motor Cycle Run, etc.
- Oversight of day to day operations (including administrative office systems and data management systems) of the Foundation and the two members of the staff: Development Coordinator and Business and Project Manager.
- Recruitment, training and oversight of internship opportunities with college students.
- Analyze fundraising results and statistics for ongoing tracking of progress and continuous improvement of efforts.
- Oversee the creation of materials/audio-visual needs for meetings, special events, etc.
- As invited, attends meeting of the Boards of Directors of McGuire Memorial and the McGuire Memorial Foundation.
- Carries out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of the McGuire Memorial Foundation.
- Works weekends, evenings and other times as necessary.
