Position/Requirements The Medical and Health Sciences Foundation of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC seeks a dynamic Major Gifts Officer for the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine. The School of Medicine, which was founded as the Western Pennsylvania Medical College and graduated its first class in 1887, has evolved into one of the nation’s leading biomedical education and research institutions. Currently ranked #5 in funding by the National Institutes of Health, the School of Medicine is home to cutting-edge biomedical research initiatives as well as a growing number of world-class investigators who are working on new discoveries that match those of medical pioneers Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Thomas Starzl. The School of Medicine is home to the largest academic simulation training center, The WISER Center and is one of only two Universities to have a Department of Structural Biology. The ideal candidate will develop and implement a School of Medicine campaign and fund-raising plan and will be responsible for creating and executing strategies to generate major individual gifts ($50,000+). The incumbent will work closely with the Dean of the school and other School of Medicine development staff. The incumbent must possess a demonstrated ability in securing major gifts and pledges from individuals, corporations and foundations, along with planning and implementing long-and-short range development initiatives that will meet established priorities and goals. A proven ability to develop a variety of fund-raising methods, plans, and strategies is a must to guarantee a successful outcome. Highly developed, strong, and effective interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide and diverse range of constituencies are essential. Sound judgment, a clear understanding of ethical standards related to development activities, and discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers and others are mandatory. At least five years of direct fund-raising/development experience with proven ability in the solicitation of major gifts, volunteer support, and alumni relations is required.
