Description:

The Medical and Health Sciences Foundation of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC seeks a seasoned fundraising professional to serve as Director of Planned Giving.

UPMC, an $8 billion integrated health system based in Pittsburgh, PA, is internationally recognized for clinical excellence and, with its academic partner, the University of Pittsburgh, is a leader in revolutionary health sciences research and training. Together these institutions are changing the future of academic medicine. The Medical and Health Sciences Foundation manages fundraising for this enterprise. The Foundation has a fundraising goal of $981 million in the University’s $2 billion capital campaign.

As an integral member of the Central Development team, the Director of Planned Giving will support fundraising efforts on behalf of the six health science schools at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute as well as a number of UPMC facilities.  The Director will be expected to implement and enhance a comprehensive program to generate donor support through testamentary bequests, charitable trusts, life-income and other gifts of a complex nature such as gifts of real estate or closely-held securities.

The Director will supervise the planned giving staff and provide leadership and consultation on potential planned gifts to all directors of development and major gift officers in the Medical and Health Sciences Foundation.  In addition, the Director will be expected to manage a personal portfolio of major gift ($50,000+) prospects.

A commitment to collaboration, highly developed and effective interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide and diverse range of constituents are essential.  Sound judgment, a clear understanding of legal and ethical standards related to development activities, and discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers and others are mandatory.  The Director must also possess comprehensive knowledge of the legal and tax implications of planned giving vehicles.

The incumbent must possess a Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of relevant experience in a development/fund-raising environment.  A Master’s degree in a related field and/or a law degree is strongly preferred.
