Dear Dewey & Kaye ConsultantDear Dewey & Kaye: I am the Our long–time Executive Director is retiring after 22 years of service. He has asked to have a seat on the Board of Directors. Is this a best practice for retiring executives?
Signed, Board Chair
Dear Board Chair: Your retiring E.D. needs to have a positive legacy which has been richly earned, so that the organization wants to maintain the historical perspective of the long time leader. A Board position is not a good practice to honor the work and dedication of your outgoing executive and to welcome the future with a new leader. The legacy of the former leader is enriched through an Emeritus role or as an honorable spokesperson for marketing and fundraising.
