Brief description:
Jewish Family & Children's Service (JF&CS) of Pittsburgh is seeking a full-time (opportunity for part-time) public relations associate to write and produce agency publicity materials, lead media relations efforts and perform various other tasks. Interested candidates should possess excellent verbal, written and online communication skills; proven media relations results with a variety of media outlets; and an ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Requirements and Skills:
- Minimum of two years of specific, concrete work experience in writing and media relations, gained either at an advertising/PR agency or in a business or nonprofit communications role; and BA/BS in public relations, communications or related program
- Excellent verbal, written and online communication skills
- Proven media relations results with a variety of media outlets
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously; produce written work on short notice; and accurately and efficiently respond to urgent media requests
- Self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, creative and high-energy
- Established interviewing skills to translate the expert opinions of JF&CS leadership and staff to the media and general community
- Experienced and comfortable working with sensitive subject matter, including an ability to draft and execute crisis communication plans to advise JF&CS leadership and staff
- Interest and/or knowledge of current events and what’s impacting the Pittsburgh region, as well as industry trends
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet; familiarity with online content management systems, social media and blogging; publication design and photo editing experience is a plus
Responsibilities:
- Strategize and lead public relations planning and efforts for all agency departments and programs, including crisis communication planning
- Develop public relations materials, such as weekly online agency e-newsletter, newspaper briefs and magazine articles
- Serve as primary media contact for JF&CS leadership and staff and coordinate every step of the media relations process, including identifying story opportunities; drafting media pitches, releases, advisories and key messages/support docs; and following up with reporters
- Prepare talking points for JF&CS staff and leadership, provide media coaching and coordinate interviews both by phone and in-person
- Respond accurately and efficiently to urgent media requests
- Organize publicity materials, maintain media list (print, broadcast and social) and build relationships with new media contacts
- Share media hits with JF&CS staff and leadership; maintain detailed media hits records; and post all media hits to agency websites using content management system
- Research and consume relevant local, national and trade media, share stories of interest with JF&CS staff and leadership and pitch to media new angles to highlight agency’s work
- Use content management system of five agency websites to update homepage content and other items
- Work with JF&CS leadership and program staff on program Facebook pages and maintain agency’s new blog
- Photograph agency programs and staff as needed
- Represent JF&CS to partner organizations re: marketing/PR opportunities
- Participate in professional development via webinars and conferences
- Report to Director of Marketing & Fundraising and support the department in other tasks as needed, including marketing, fundraising, special events and outreach
