Position Overview
Crossroads Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Director of Development to support the programs and operations of this 22 year old organization. Crossroads invests time, tuition and focused interventions in students from economically distressed neighborhoods willing to make the commitment to succeed in a Catholic high school setting. Through mentoring, skills building, family engagement, academic rigor and leadership training, the students graduate high school and over 96 percent of them go on to college or post secondary prep. The ideal candidate must be passionate about our mission, and possess initiative, creativity, resourcefulness and drive. This position requires someone who is experienced in cultivating relationships with key stakeholders including the corporate community, foundations, individual donors and alumni. The Director of Development works closely with the Executive Director and the Development Committee of the Board of Directors to develop and implement annual and long range fundraising plans. The foundation also has an endowment in place, the proceeds from which must be considered in combination with other funding sources. Crossroads is located in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh and currently has a staff of seven. Although it works closely with the Catholic school system, it is independent of the Catholic Diocese and the majority of Crossroads scholars are not Catholic.
Reporting Structure
Position reports to the Executive Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- With the assistance of the Executive Director, the Development Committee and the Director of Program Design, Evaluation and Best Practices, create an annual development plan and a long range development plan. The plans should include but are not limited to: special events fundraising activities; donor and alumni communications and newsletters; corporate and foundation planned solicitations; solicitation and cultivation of prospective individual donors; United Way Contributors Choice and Pittsburgh Gives campaigns; funding solicitation through Crossroads’ website and social networking. Much of this is in place but candidate needs to grow and expand these initiatives
- Implement annual giving campaigns, personal solicitations, capital/endowment campaigns
- Build and expand the existing individual giving program
- Initiate and cultivate relationships with foundations and corporate funders and works with Executive Director and Director of Program Design, Evaluation and Best Practices to write grant proposals
- Initiate a robust planned giving program
- Build and manage all development-related aspects of Alumni relations
- Participate as a member of the Board’s Development Committee
- Develop a communications/outreach program including donor newsletter(s), targeted mailings, public speaking engagements and a solicitation packet that includes testimonials
- Actively solicit Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) funding from the PA corporate community
- Monitor and maintain a timely tracking process to ensure donation recognition responses, compliance reports and deadlines are met as required by donors in a timely manner
- Summarize donor activity for the Annual Report and as required by the Executive Director and the Development Committee of the Board of Directors
- Work with volunteers involved in fund development activities
- Monitor and track all donations in the donor database
- Prepare written and database generated reports to keep the Executive Director apprised of all development activities and subsequent progress in a timely manner.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate has a blend of the following:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Unquestioned integrity and honesty
- Act 33 & 34 Clearance required
- Working knowledge of non-profit organizations
- Minimum (3) years of development or fundraising experience with a proven track record of success in individual, corporate and foundation fundraising in a non-profit environment. (Combination of comparable skills, education and experience may be considered).
- Commitment to education and closing the racial, gender and class achievement gaps
- Good writing skills and possession of strong verbal communications skills
- Ability to work independently and take direction as needed
- Ability to interact with diverse constituencies
- Strong administrative and organizational skills
- Strong computer/IT skills, knowledge of development/donor software and Excel
- Ability to create a budget and make revenue projections based on pipeline
- Outgoing, personable, entrepreneurial, and comfortable taking the initiative
- Ability to work professionally and collegially in a small office setting
- Ability to work the hours necessary to complete the work. Car is a must.
Compensation
Exempt employee. The position has an attractive salary and benefits package consistent with other non-profits of similar size and mission in the Pittsburgh region.
