Carnegie Museum of Art seeks a full-time art handler to assist in handling works of art in connection with temporary exhibitions and presentations of the permanent collection. Tasks include movement, installation, de-installation, carpentry, framing, packing, crating, loading trucks, maintenance of the collections in the galleries and storage areas, audio/visual presentation, and related duties. Assist in the care, protection, and preparation of works of art in the museum’s collection or temporarily in the museum’s care. Monitor and direct similar tasks performed by temporary art handling staff.   Must be team oriented and willing to adapt over time to changing and increasingly stringent art handling and industry practices. Requires the use of hand and power tools of varying sizes and complexity, small moving van, hydraulic lifts, pallet jacks, j-bars, and dollies. Position requires the physical ability to climb and work on ladders and lifts for extended periods of time, reach, stretch and stoop, work with hands above shoulder level, lift heavy objects (50 pounds) and stand or walk for long periods of time. Experience in forklift and gantry operation and basic rigging skills is useful. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and Outlook; working knowledge of basic office equipment such as copier, printer, and fax, is also necessary. 2-3 years of work experience in a visual art environment or comparable setting (e.g., museum, gallery, exhibit design/installation firm), including an understanding of fabrication and installation techniques and materials and the ability to read layouts and blueprints. Seeking a high school or vocational-technical school graduate with courses in shop, carpentry, and/or studio arts. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as fine or studio arts or architecture is preferred. A valid Pennsylvania’s driver’s license to move between worksites and storage facilities is required. The candidate must be able to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively and effectively with diverse staff members, contractors, artists, and couriers.
