President and Chief Executive Officer, Alzheimer's Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter - Pittsburgh, PA

The Alzheimer's Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter is seeking a highly-qualified, experienced, visionary leader to serve as the next President and Chief Executive Officer of our approximately $2 million organization.  The successful candidate will be an experienced executive leader and a strong fundraiser and communicator, capable of balancing multiple priorities, successfully advancing our mission and allowing us to serve the growing number of Pennsylvanians affected by Alzheimer's disease.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic mission-focused strategic thinker, equally comfortable and effective working with donors, board members, legislators, staff, and families directly affected by the disease.  Self-confident and comfortable in demonstrating significant leadership skills preferably honed in a voluntary health agency, our next executive will have a solid, practical understanding of the difference between governance and operations and the different, but interrelated, roles of staff and board.  A collaborative bridge-builder, he or she will be a leader and mentor for staff, a courageous partner for the board, and an effective spokesperson for the Association and the disease across the area of the chapter’s territory.  A highly-skilled communicator, he or she will also bring relevant experience managing fund development activities, will lead the chapter’s ongoing development and growth and will be mission-driven, evidence-based, and business-minded. 

About the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter
The Alzheimer's Association, Greater Pennsylvania chapter has offices in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Erie, and Wilkes-Barre and serves 59 counties in western, central, and northeastern Pennsylvania.  Governed by a statewide board of directors, the chapter is guided in its work by three regional advisory councils and staffed by 20 highly-committed individuals who help provide education, support and resources for those touched by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.  The chapter also raises awareness as well as funds for research, outreach, and programming through a variety of strategies, including our annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The Greater Pennsylvania chapter is part of the national Alzheimer's Association which consists of 77 chapters and a national office based in Chicago.  The Association is linked by our commitment to shared fundraising and our common mission to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Desired Experiences, Qualities and Competencies of the Successful Candidate
To fill this role, we seek an individual with proven experiences and abilities.  These will include:

Communication: The successful candidate will be able to express ideas and facts in a clear and understandable manner to internal and external stakeholders.  He or she will have experience delivering organized, structured, and convincing presentations; listening to and understanding others and will ensure that written and verbal communication consistently reflect the Alzheimer's Association’s mission, goals, values and brand.

Executive Leadership: Working with our geographically diverse board of directors, the successful candidate will foster Board relationships, helping to develop and empower board members, identifying and recruiting new members, and engaging and inspiring current and past board members to help the Association achieve its goals.  He or she will also lead a four-person staff leadership team and will empower the leadership team and chapter staff across the state to succeed in their jobs, developing operating plans and budgets in accordance with board direction and ensuring appropriate input from all relevant stakeholders.  She or he will create and maintain an organizational climate that builds trust; attracts, motivates and retains high quality staff and practices; and will understand, value, and grow our pool of passionate and diverse supporters.  The President/CEO will build and manage a highly effective working relationship with the national Association network, capitalizing on the ability to learn from and with staff at the national level as well as other chapters across the country.

Fundraising: The President / CEO will position the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and its programs to maximize fund development opportunities and will possess knowledge and management experience with all types of fund raising activities, particularly those that drive our work.  Focused on the future, she or he will have the ability to make significant asks and foster relationships, engaging donors of all levels in our work and recognizing and championing the value and potential of our many stakeholders. 

In addition to the qualities, experiences and skills listed above, the President / CEO will be highly competent in the following areas:

Financial Management: Experienced in managing budgets of a similar or larger size, the successful executive candidate will ensure appropriate financial structure, understand accounting principles, oversee use of resources, and adhere to revenue and expense budgets.

Adaptability & Flexibility   The ideal candidate will have experience adapting to and managing a multifaceted, multi-office organization, demonstrating an ability to adapt and be flexible while proactively engaging with the unique environments and cultures that make up the chapter territory and stakeholders.  He or she will be highly skilled at listening to and understanding others, creating an environment that accepts and respects individual and cultural differences.

Position Requirements
In addition to these essential skills and experiences, the board is seeking an individual with at least five years of demonstrated senior management experience in a non-profit or business management position, as well as the ability and willingness to travel to offices and meetings throughout the chapter’s territory and to national meetings on behalf of the chapter.  A master’s degree in public, health or business administration, or equivalent work experience, is preferred.
