Dear Nonprofit CEO: A Message From Your Employees
By Todd Owens, Principal, Dewey & Kaye
Recently, I had the privilege of meeting with two dozen of the most talented, motivated and enthusiastic young people in the nonprofit sector. These were not the individuals highlighted in recent research about the lack of talented leadership to fill the void created by the baby boomers that founded many nonprofit organizations across the country. The occasion was the first in a series of Executive Director 101 Seminars presented by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network.

6 Minutes With a CEO
Leadership Identification, Development and Succession Planning has been a focus of Dewey & Kaye since our founding in 1990. In this monthly Mosaic newsletter feature, we highlight an influential, effective and innovative nonprofit CEO, and the organization they are leading successfully. Please take a few minutes out of your day to learn what's helped them succeed in their career, and what advice they have for aspiring nonprofit executives.
We're delighted this month to feature:
Charlie Humphrey
Executive Director,

Executive Director Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
Executive Director, Pittsburgh Glass Center
- When did you first have aspirations of being a CEO?
I can't ever recall aspiring to be a CEO. I've always, very mistakenly, thought I was already in charge. I don't recommend this approach.

The "New Normal"
April 5, 2011
10:30am – 12:30pm
The "New Normal" – spikes and dips have always presented our country, economy and sector with unique challenges. We always knew that when a dip occurred, we would respond to it, learn something and adjust for the next dip. We knew that the cycle would pass and over time the challenges would allow for natural evolution. This time the cycle is different. The economy, politics and way we do business has changed forever. Those organizations that are not re-inventing themselves will fail. This session will provide thoughts about what is happening in the field that represents innovative reinvention.

The Frieda Shapira Medal
The Forbes Funds is pleased to announce we are now accepting Nominations for the 7th Frieda Shapira Medal.
In 2003, The Forbes Funds inaugurated The Frieda Shapira Medal, honoring a lifetime community reformer who, as a social worker for the Children's Service Bureau, taught neglected and dependent children, and who, as a trustee, served numerous organizations, including The Pittsburgh Foundation, The United Way of Allegheny County, The United Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and The Forbes Funds. Since then, the Shapira Medal has been awarded to an individual who has demonstrated: (1) distinctive and exceptional leadership for one's organization; (2) accomplishments that advanced the field; and (3) commitment to service beyond one's own organization. Past winners included James Henry Jr. (awarded posthumously), Myrna Zelenitz, Father Regis Ryan, Dr. Walter Smith, Joyce Rothermel and Al Condeluci.
In addition to public recognition, the Shapira Medal carries a $5,000 cash prize. The award winner will be announced at the 2011 Nonprofit Summit Luncheon on May 12th at the Westin Convention Center Hotel. A table for 10 people will be reserved for the winner and guests.
