In this monthly Mosaic newsletter feature, we highlight an influential, effective and innovative nonprofit CEO, and the organization they are leading successfully. Please take a few minutes out of your day to learn what's helped them succeed in their career, and what advice they have for aspiring nonprofit executives.

- Given that this is your first CEO role, what about the job was unexpected and has surprised you the most?
I am uncertain of the specific moment I had thoughts about being a CEO but it was early in my career while I worked at a men's homeless shelter. I had many conversations with my supervisor at the time about the inherent limitation of programs and resources that had so many rules and regulations that many people who needed help couldn't get it due to not fitting neatly into someone's regulatory box. I was often frustrated by this reality and wanted to change it. I never thought I could change the world but believed if I had the opportunity to head an organization that organization would find a way to help people regardless of any limiting factors. We would try always to do the right thing.

The Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs
is currently accepting applications for the
Fellows Class of 2012.
The Coro Fellows Program prepares diverse, talented and committed individuals for effective and ethical leadership in the public arena. It is a nine month, full-time, post-graduate program. Sixty to 65 Fellows participate annually, distributed among Coro's five regional centers: San Francisco, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and New York.
Coro seeks individuals with demonstrated leadership potential and a genuine commitment to public service. Participation requires at minimum a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
