6 Minutes with a CEO

Leadership Identification, Development and Succession Planning has been a focus of Dewey & Kaye since our founding in 1990. In this monthly Mosaic newsletter feature, we highlight an influential, effective and innovative nonprofit CEO, and the organization they are leading successfully. Please take a few minutes out of your day to learn what's helped them succeed in their career, and what advice they have for aspiring nonprofit executives.

We're delighted this month to feature Everett McElveen, the President & CEO of Life'sWork of Western PA .

  1. Given that this is your first CEO role, what about the job was unexpected and has surprised you the most?

I am uncertain of the specific moment I had thoughts about being a CEO but it was early in my career while I worked at a men's homeless shelter. I had many conversations with my supervisor at the time about the inherent limitation of programs and resources that had so many rules and regulations that many people who needed help couldn't get it due to not fitting neatly into someone's regulatory box. I was often frustrated by this reality and wanted to change it. I never thought I could change the world but believed if I had the opportunity to head an organization that organization would find a way to help people regardless of any limiting factors. We would try always to do the right thing.
